The team at Freeman Fox Stockbroking recommended clients consider a Buy Write in February on BHP to generate premium income.
The BHP share price on 25 February was $29.69*.
An Exercise price of $31.00 at the end of March was recommended.
For that you could have received $1.301 for each share that you owned.
So if you had 1,000 shares you would receive $1,300 (less broking costs), 10,000 shares you would get $13,000 and so on.
This is paid the next trading day and is yours to keep regardless.
That is a return of 4.2% for the month!
If the share price rises above $31 there is an almost certain chance you will be exercised (called upon to sell the shares – you are required to do this).
You will sell them for $31, for an additional profit of $1.31 (less brokerage).
If the share price stays below $31 you get to keep them.
The strategy becomes unprofitable at a $28.39 share price.
This call was exercised for a total return of 6.6% after all costs.
